Recently the NMC shared the news that we was awarded a a three-year $955,000 National Leadership Grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Sciences (IMLS) that provides another opportunity to partner with museums on an innovative software development project. For the grant, Steve in Action: Social Tagging Tools and Methods Applied, NMC will coordinate a project to further develop the Steve tagging application, a tool that simplifies the navigation of online museum collections by allowing viewers to tag an image with descriptive terms.

Michael Wright, aka Mrags Writer is exhibiting work in a juried exhibition called “Urban Legends and Country Tales”. The exhibition showcasing the work of forty-two artists from around the world opens on the 4th of October, 2008 at the Bonita Museum, San Diego, California. The opening and public reception for Urban Legends and Country Tales will be 6 to 8:30 pm on Saturday, Oct. 4th. Wright will be exhibiting a print from his avatar series as one of the fifty juried prints demonstrating the multiple directions art has taken in the contemporary art world – both in pluralism of styles and the hybridism of technique and media.

Into the Breach

Cover of Into the Breach This paper, produced as part of the NMC's Digital Education Project for Texas Art Museums, documents the sad state in which arts education finds itself; shines a light of hope on that picture; and makes recommendations that arts-focused institutions and their donor communities can use to help make a difference in keeping a love for the arts alive across the state.

That partnership, which falls under the umbrella of the NMC's Digital Media and Learning Initiative, has help us to continue to support the Pachyderm Project, to strengthen our longstanding collaborations with the Digital Storytelling Institute, Hippasus, and other organizations, and to better understand the pedagogy and power of story when coupled with digital media.

Once More, Unto the Breach!

This is not my first blog.  Like a smoker going back to the patch over and over to no avail, albeit al reverso, I have put my hand to keyboard now many times to start a blog.  But -- as any accomplished blogger will tell you -- it is not an easy task to stick to.  This time, I have a strategy, if not a plan.  My blog is here, nestled in the warm cuddles of the NMC website, the public face of the community that is as much my home as the one I share with my family.

Imagine flying over a pyramid shaped boat as a variety of tones from the engine combine to create a melody. That is just what visitors will get when they interact with the new virtual art collection created by Ball State University faculty in Second Life.

John Fillwalk, Ball State associate professor of art, and director of the Institute for Digital Intermedia Arts and Animation (IDIAA), is the lead artist on a project that will be showcased in Second Life beginning Sunday, Aug. 24 2008, and run through September.

The NMC offered Fillwalk and the IDIAA the chance to transform an entire Second Life island with interactive virtual art. The collection, which will be up for a month, is part of a series of installations hosted by NMC throughout the year.
