On October 20, 2008, the NMC announced the release of a white paper produced in conjunction with the Economist Magazine and in collaboration with Apple, Inc. This paper reports the results of a study of nearly 300 CIOs and technology leaders inside and outside of education.

Results of NMC 2008 Member Organization Survey
Posted August 1st, 2008 by Alan LevineAs part of its role in benchmarking the field of New Media, the NMC is sharing the results of its annual survey of member organizations.
Between January and April 2008, we surveyed 276 NMC institutions to collect information on services provided, technologies used, current projects, and staffing. Below you will find the results of this survey, including data on use of NMC benefits media services provided, exploration of new technologies, support for technologies, projects in virtual worlds, use of open-source tools, and staffing/salary data.

ePortfolio Use
Posted July 28th, 2008 by Alan LevineA few weeks ago we posted Collaborating without Email as an idea how to gather information from NMCTAB withoutn the usual round of long emails needing manual compilation. A member had asked to poll the NMCTAB on use of ePortolio software and whether that as a resource had been used in an accredidation process. We did this by setting up a form in Google docs that populates an online repadsheet.
The results included 25 responses collected in 9 days, without one email filling up the NMCTAB listserv. The results are available at http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=prvl0yLfIeb5nQKy_I253HA
Collaborating Without Email?
Posted July 2nd, 2008 by Alan LevineThe NMC's listserv for our members, the NMCTAB, is frequently rated high in our surveys as a valuable service... but we are sure no one would mind getting information in fewer email messages. One effort we have been taking to better organize the discussions is to provide summaries of the more active discussions posted to the NMC web site.
Often, our members are looking for specific kinds of software or practices used at other institutions. While this information can be collected from email responses it is a tedious cut and paste operation, and generates a flood of email responses.
The best live video streaming technology
Posted May 22nd, 2007 by ehuangHow many of you have ever used the very popular Flash video streaming technology to do live video streaming for real? I guess very few. Do you know what the best live video streaming technology is today? This could be an expensive question because, once you have invested in a wrong technology, chances are you will stick to it. As a result, you will pay a big price later in many senses.
Live video streaming is widely used in distance education, Web conferencing, online movie delivery, broadcast and so on. Knowing the answer to this question is important to streaming video producers and their companies, schools, government agencies, or organizations. Unfortunately, the answer to this question is not available.
NMC Spring 2007 Survey on Educators in Second Life
Posted May 1st, 2007 by NMCToday the New Media Consortium opened a survey aimed at drawing a picture of the current and planned activities and interests of educators involved in the virtual environment, Second Life.
Since March 2006 the NMC has been actively engaged in the frontier of virtual worlds with the establishment and expansion of its . This effort has been a natural extension of the research in previous reports from the NMC's Horizon Project.
To further our understanding of how educators are using Second Life as well as to better frame the demographics of this audience, we are conducting an online anonymous survey open now through May 25. If you are an educator (faculty, staff, student, adminsitrator) and have an active Second Life account, we appreciate your willingness to answer our 42 item survey available at:
Results of Fall 2006 NMC Member Survey
Posted April 5th, 2007 by NMCThe nearly 250 members of the NMC provide a unique cross section institutions using technology to support teaching, learning, and creativity. Each year we collect information from our members about the current practices in our field of New Media for both a snapshot of current practices overall, and to provide benchmarks for our members.
The results of the survey are attached below.
In December 2006 we surveyed 237 NMC institutions to collect information on services provided, technologies used, and current projects. Attached you will find the results of this survey, including data on use of NMC benefits media services provided, exploration of new technologies, support for technologies (e.g. audio/video streaming, blogs, wikis, and iTunesU), use of open-source tools, and more.
