Future of Higher Education: How Technology Will Shape Learning

Into the Breach

That partnership, which falls under the umbrella of the NMC's Digital Media and Learning Initiative, has help us to continue to support the Pachyderm Project, to strengthen our longstanding collaborations with the Digital Storytelling Institute, Hippasus, and other organizations, and to better understand the pedagogy and power of story when coupled with digital media.

2008 Horizon Report Cover The annual Horizon Report describes the continuing work of the NMC’s Horizon Project, a research-oriented effort that seeks to identify and describe emerging technologies likely to have considerable impact on teaching, learning, and creative expression within higher education

Social Networking, the "Third Place," and the Evolution of Communication

Cover of Evolution of Communications This white paper discusses the premise that technology not only mediates interactions, but is actually changing the nature of communication itself. This release marks the first in a series of topical papers associated with the NMC’s Series of Virtual Symposia (formerly the Series of Online Conferences), which are designed to explore emerging topics in education and technology using social computing technologies to bring people together online in a way that offers many of the same affordances of a face-to-face conference.

2007 Educators in Second Life Survey

2007 NMC Second Life Survey Sent out to members of the NMC, our in-world educational community, and the Second Life Educators Listserv (SLED) in May 2007, this survey represents the interests, activities, and demographics of more than 200 educators. Overall, the results reflect the highly social interaction of Second Life and how educators have formed and contribute to a vibrant community in this virtual world space.

Horizon Project: 2007 Call to Scholarship

2008 Horizon Project Call to Scholarship The NMC has undertaken for the first time a concerted, international effort to describe a research agenda and call to scholarship based on the six practices and technologies featured in the 2007 edition of the Horizon Report. The community was invited to participate in this process, contribute to the discussion, and help shape directions for future research in these topics across higher education.
